Aviation Pilots & Student Pilots

Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS)

Aviation medical examiners (AME) and the FAA directly refer pilots for a psychiatric evaluation for a variety of issues including alcohol and substance use, the presence of psychiatric illness, prior treatment with a psychiatric medication or therapy to ensure the pilot is fit to fly. Federal Aviation Administration HIMS Psychiatric Evaluations must be conducted by a qualified psychiatrist who is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Board of Osteopathic Neurology and Psychiatry and must either be board certified in Addiction Psychiatry or have received training in the Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) program.

A key part of the HIMS process is the HIMS Psychiatric Evaluation, which must be conducted by a qualified psychiatrist who meets stringent certification requirements. Specifically, these evaluations must be performed by a psychiatrist who is board-certified by either the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or the American Board of Osteopathic Neurology and Psychiatry (ABONP). Additionally, the psychiatrist must either hold certification in Addiction Psychiatry, which provides specialized knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders, or have undergone specific training in the HIMS program itself.

The HIMS Psychiatric Evaluation is thorough and designed to assess the pilot’s current mental and emotional state, as well as their history of substance use or psychiatric treatment. The evaluation typically includes a detailed review of the pilot’s medical records, interviews, and the use of diagnostic tools such as psychological testing or substance use screenings. The psychiatrist will evaluate the pilot’s ability to safely return to flying duties, taking into account factors such as the severity of the addiction or mental health disorder, the effectiveness of any treatments, and the pilot’s risk for relapse.
